Tackling the high costs for the aviation industry in Africa

On the second day of the AFRAA Annual General Assembly, Bruno Boucher, Lufthansa Consulting’s Associate Partner and Head of Market Africa West, Central and North, moderated a panel of experts on the topic “How can Africa tackle the challenge of high industry costs?” After an introduction showing the typical costs of an operating airline in Africa, the panel group discussed possible ways of cost reduction for the continent’s aviation industry. The panel included leaders of Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority, IATA Africa, ACI, TIACA, Embraer and ATR. Topics addressed covered fuel prices, airports and passenger taxes, possible contribution of cargo business as well as how modern and adapted aircraft can contribute to limiting the fuel consumption in the African market.

The African Airlines Association concluded its 49th Annual General Assembly in Kigali, Republic of Rwanda, under the theme ”Rethinking strategies for airline profitability in Africa“. The assembly was attended by over 450 high profile delegates from 52 countries across the globe. The objective of this event was to stimulate the development of inter-African air transport in general and development opportunities for African airlines in particular.
At the three-day conference aviation leaders discussed various challenges in African aviation to make resolutions on key focus areas.
