2010 is a significant year for your airline’s free emissions allowances as the next deadline approaches.
Since January 2010, airlines have been required to monitor their annual emissions and tonne-km data according to their approved monitoring plans. Airlines which have not yet implemented these mandatory processes and procedures need to act immediately as the submission of the verified tonne-km report by 31st of March 2011 is the precondition to get free allowances from 2012 until 2020!
The success of an early process implementation is very important, as the verifiers will closely check the alignment between implemented procedures and the procedures described in the monitoring plans. A further challenge for airlines will be to find an appropriate verifying partner. Lufthansa Consulting strongly recommends cooperating with partners on a pre-verification of implemented processes and procedures as soon as possible.
Airlines not able to surrender sufficient certificates to cover their CO2-emissions for 2012 will lose their right to land and start from airports in the European Union. As seen in the ground sector, where Emissions Trading was already implemented in 2005, emissions certificates will be a scarce resource. Lufthansa Consulting is cooperating with one of the leading carbon asset management company “First Climate” to help you defining your risk management strategy.
