EU-ETS workshop for Russian and CIS airlines

Lufthansa Consulting tangibly supports airlines to accomplish the tough challenges of the upcoming European Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). On 28th April 2009 the German aviation consultancy holds a special workshop in Moscow to share its expertise with those carriers in the Russian and CIS region that operate flights to the European Union.

In 2008, the EU voted to include airline activities in the European Emissions Trading Scheme. The ETS came about as a consequence of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the aim is now for airlines to implement the reduction in CO2 emissions by 20 per cent by 2020 from the 1990 levels. The scheme indicates that air carriers have to cover their CO2 emissions with emissions allowances for all flights to, from and within Europe. Action is urgently needed, since already in August 2009 the airlines must submit a monitoring plan to the respective European authorities. The submission of the monitoring plan is a prerequisite for airlines to be eligible for the free allocation of emissions allowances.

The workshop will focus on detailed information about the new requirements and preparation measures concerning the forthcoming ETS.  Lufthansa Consulting will thus help air operators to cope with the major financial, administrative and strategic impacts resulting form ETS and to develop solutions for the airlines’ contribution to environmental sustainability.
